Avalanche Terrain Avoidance Seminar

The Avalanche Terrain Avoidance (ATA) Seminar is meant to teach casual winter hikers (such as snowshoers and cross country skiers) how to avoid avalanche terrain.

This course is the mandatory minimum for any CMC Denver leaders certified as leaders after October 1, 2011 who wish to lead hikes during the winter season (November through April).  All leaders certified prior to October 1, 2011 are grandfathered from ATA for 5 years beginning October 1, 2011.

CMC leaders who wish to lead activities in the backcountry should sign up for the AIARE I course. Additional information can be found here.

Information for the 2013/2014 Seasons

Fees: trip leaders $20, DG members $30; general public $35. This 3-hour class is required for all new winter trip leaders. All CMC members and non-members are welcome. An optional field day is offered at no charge.   Field trip participation is limited and sign up is required. Please see the Activity Schedule to sign up for this trip.  The field trip will consist of identification of slope angles, avalanche terrain and non-avalanche terrain.
